Selling rules

You must be at least 18, hold a 21ST AURA account, and have the legal right to sell the vehicle you advertise. One account per person. Do not advertise a vehicle on behalf of someone else without their authority.

When you set up your seller profile you choose Private seller or Trader. This badge appears on every listing you publish, so buyers always know who they are dealing with.

You are a motor vehicle trader if you are in the business of selling motor vehicles — for example you buy to resell, or you sell more than six vehicles in a 12-month period. New Zealand law generally requires traders to be registered under the Motor Vehicle Sales Act 2003.

21ST AURA never presents a private seller as a trader, and never presents a trader as a private seller. Advertising trader stock as a private sale (often called curbstoning) is prohibited here and may breach the Fair Trading Act 1986.

We do not verify trader registration on your behalf. Choosing the trader badge does not make you registered, and choosing the private badge does not exempt you from the law.

Registered motor vehicle traders must display a Consumer Information Notice (CIN) with every used vehicle offered for sale. Our publishing flow requires the trader name, registration number and cash price before a trader listing can go live, and our database enforces this at publish time.

Providing those fields does not make your CIN complete or compliant — the full CIN content, accuracy and display remain your legal responsibility.

Traders also have obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986, including that the vehicle is of acceptable quality and matches its description. You cannot contract out of the CGA when selling to a consumer in trade.

Your listing must match the vehicle you are selling. That includes make, model, variant, year, odometer reading, registration plate, fuel, transmission, body type, colour, WOF and registration expiry, and the asking price in NZD.

Do not overstate condition, hide faults, or reuse photos of a similar vehicle. Photos must be of the actual vehicle, taken recently, and must not contain other people's watermarks.

Before publishing you must declare:

• Any damage, accident repair, flood or hail damage, or written-off history.
• Any money owing on the vehicle, including finance or a registered security interest.
• Known mechanical faults and the service history you have.
• Whether the odometer reading is believed accurate.

Disclosing problems protects you as well as the buyer. Hiding them can expose you to a claim under the Fair Trading Act or the Contract and Commercial Law Act.

Publishing requires two tick-box declarations: a seller declaration that your details are true and complete and that you have the right to sell, and a platform declaration that you accept our terms of use and understand that 21ST AURA is not a party to the sale and does not handle money.

Trader accounts must additionally complete the CIN fields. A listing cannot be published until all of these are satisfied.

At least one photo is required. Photos are stored privately and only become viewable once your listing is published or sold — drafts stay private to you.

Do not include your phone number, email address, home address, licence, or identity documents in photos, the description, or messages. Contact details are never published; buyers reach you through platform messaging.

Save a draft at any time and finish it later. After publishing you can edit details, mark the vehicle sold once it is gone, or archive the listing to remove it from the marketplace. Only you can see and change your own listings.

• Vehicles you do not own or are not authorised to sell.
• Odometer tampering or misstating the reading.
• Listings placed to advertise a different business or service.
• Duplicate listings for the same vehicle.
• Pressuring buyers for deposits before a viewing.
• Harassing, discriminatory or misleading messages.

We may suspend or archive listings, and suspend accounts, that breach these rules. Moderation actions are recorded in an audit log.

We do not inspect vehicles, verify ownership or history, appraise value, arrange finance, or guarantee any sale. We do not hold, receive or release money, and there is no escrow or payment processing on the platform. We provide the advertising and messaging platform only.
